I am very spontaneous and at the same time very indecisive which means I am not the best at planning ahead. When it comes to day hiking, in the past I had tended to bring very minimal food if any at all. I always thought a 4 or 5 mile hike was a good reason to go a few hours without grazing all day long as I am prone to when hanging out at home.
Ahhhh. Spring. The season that signals winter finally coming to an end. And what better reason to get outdoors now that the temperatures are finally warming up then to go and see some beautiful spring flowers in bloom?
The west coast has some spectacular spring blooms from the desert regions to high alpine area's. Southern California's flowers will begin to bloom the earliest of course but is highly dependent on how much rainfall was received over the previous winter months while in the higher latitudes and elevations blooming won't begin until early summer.
Keep reading to see where some of the west coast's most spectacular spring blooms are. They are most definitely worth planning a trip around!
We recently took a road trip to Joshua Tree National Park. Unlike most of our other trips where we usually have an unlimited amount of travel time, this was only a short getaway due to new work commitments.
Believe it or not, we lived in Los Angeles for a year and a half and never got around to visiting this park! Now that we had moved two states away I was itching to explore the Joshua Tree area. When I received a low airfare alert from Skyscanner for flights to Long Beach I jumped on the opportunity. We booked car hire in advance online and you wouldn't believe the rate we scored... $80 for 4 days!!! Hell yeah!!!
Flying into Long Beach turned out to be a really good decision. It was a small and easy airport to navigate. And there was no traffic! No traffic on the way out to Joshua Tree on a Sunday morning on the Presidents Holiday Weekend!! Also, on our return during the week we were going against the traffic. I have included a list of the nearest airports below if your are flying in to visit Joshua Tree too.
Portland is a hip and easy town to spend a few days in. Easy because of the public transport infrastructure and because the whole city is small enough to cover on foot if you really want to.
There are many mouth-watering restaurants and food pods to explore, unusual activities to try, and even outdoor recreation nearby if you're feeling inclined.
Wallace Falls is a popular outdoor destination for hikers and outdoor lovers and is only about an hour's drive from Seattle making it a great day trip idea. The area boasts typical Pacific-Northwest lush, green visuals (think evergreen tree's dripping in mosses and pretty ferns) and is the perfect place to visit on a Washington road trip to get a feel for the Upper Left.
Want to have a romantic getaway or relaxing retreat in a cozy A-frame cabin nestled among gorgeous sweet-smelling pine tree's? Then you need to check out this cute vacation home located in the charming village of Idyllwild!
Don't know where Idyllwild is? That's a good thing! Unlike the more busier mountain towns such as Big Bear, Idyllwild has a much slower pace and relaxing atmosphere which is ideal if you're looking for a place to unwind.
Idyllwild is a charming little town nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains south east of Los Angeles.
Set amongst tall pine tree's, surrounded by stunning rocky mountains and a downtown area filled with locally owned stores and restuarants, Idyllwild has a cute small mountain town ambience.
Unlike some of the more popular mountain towns found north, you won't see any big chain-store outlets or grocery stores here.
Idyllwild's scenery is somewhat reminiscent of Yosemite and is the perfect place for a relaxing weekend getaway or romantic escape.
This past weekend we sailed on our friend's boat to Catalina Island for his 30th birthday. We booked three nights on one of the nine boat-in only campsites and it was an amazing experience! The weather was perfect and the water was crystal clear. Find out how you too can camp on your own private beach! It's a perfect idea for special occasions and celebrations... or maybe even pop the question on Catalina Island?

The Upper Yosemite Falls trail is our favorite hike in Yosemite National Park...so much so we considered doing it twice during our most recent trip! If you've ever done this hike you might be thinking that's a little insane. Especially in the middle of summer.
But even though this is a strenuous and steep hike the effort is well worth it. You get some great views of the Yosemite Valley floor even if you only make it up to Columbia Rock and if you persist a little further you will be able to view the bottom of the Upper Falls too. But the effort really pays off if you make it to the top!

We love the Malibu area! It's so close to the city, but yet feels so far away... especially when you're out hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Today we decided to spend our Sunday hiking the Solstice Canyon Loop Trail. We couldn't believe we hadn't done this hike sooner as we regularly hang out and watch the sunset from the nearby lookout AND have lived in the area for 9 months!
Anyway, this is a gorgeous trail and one of the best we've done in Malibu. Perfect for the summer months because you can take a dip in the refreshing waterfall at the end of your hike.
