1. Valley Of Fire
Named for its magnificent red sandstone formation that were formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of the dinosaurs, these brilliant sandstone formations can appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. In spring the park blooms with desert marigold, indigo bush, and desert mallow making the park look especially spectacular. Wildlife here includes lizards, snakes, coyote, bobcat, kit fox, skunk and if you're lucky you may see desert bighorn sheep or desert tortoises.
2. Great Basin National Park
Great Basin National Park has everything from snow-covered peaks and alpine lakes to the oldest tree's in the world. Wheeler peak soars above the desert valleys dominating the skyline and can be driven up to along a 12 mile scenic drive to the roads end at 10, 000 feet. You can also see the Bristlecone Pine tree here which are the oldest tree's in the world. To get there you need to take highway 50, dubbed "The loneliest road in America".
3. Lake Mead
Lake Mead National Recreation Area covers 1.5 million acres and is twice the size of Rhode Island. It's huge lake caters to boaters, swimmers, sunbathers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers and roadside sightseers. Three of America's four desert ecosystems, the Mojave, the Great Basin, and the Sonoran deserts meet in Lake Mead. As a result, this seemingly barren area contain a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which may be found nowhere else in the world. This is a great place to visit with the whole family.
4. Red Rock Conservation Area
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area presents awe-inspiring views most wouldn't expect to see near a major metropolitan city. In contrast to the bright lights and hype of the Strip, Red Rock offers desert beauty, towering red cliffs and abundant wildlife only 30 minutes away. The sandstone rocks get their color from iron oxide which produces the vibrant, crimson color the canyon illustrates today. A nice getaway from the madness of the Las Vegas strip.
5. Las Vegas
From it's dazzling lights to its elaborate themed casino's, Las Vegas captures the imagination of the world like no other city. A resort town famed for its buzzing energy, 24 hour casino's and endless entertainment options, you won't be short of things to do here.
